Swede's Dock

To my children;

What follows is a letter to you describing in a small way something about the family we belong to. Like all Americans, your forebears are immigrants. This will be pretty much about the Lovgren side of the family. The original Lovgrens (eight brothers and a sister), and most of their wives, came to a strange country, a strange language, strange customs, far more unknowns than familiars, a veritable NEW WORLD. It strikes me it takes courage to do that.

They also pretty much covered the most exciting century in terms of change in the human history of the world. Imagine, if you can (and who could?), they saw, and were part of, the widespread introduction of electricity, the automobile, telephones, radio, television, atomic energy, computers, modern medicine, vaccines (a case of measles would be cause to quarantine an entire house or even the neighborhood, Polio - a parent's worst and continual fear, something you probably never even heard of), mechanized warfare, immense personal freedom, cars & high-speed roads, air travel, space travel, a nearly doubled life span, synthetic fibers (who can afford natural fibers today?), fantastic increases in agricultural productivity, an end to perpetual hunger and abject unrelenting poverty in this country and most of the world. All but the absolutely poorest segment of any society today lives infinitely better than the wealthiest of the last century, the population of our country has increased by a factor of at least 5,..... the list is truly awesome.

It also strikes me you you have been cheated of something very rich in not really knowing them. Their times were pretty much past before your times came. What follows are a few recollections and maybe a little feel for what it was like growing up with and knowing them and what the times were like.

{Note the family is presented in age order
(to the best of my recollection) on the left.}
